Yoshitoshi, a man of rare talent was recognized as the last great master of Ukiyo-e prints. He was born in 1839, during the last decades of feudalism in Japan. He became an apprentice of the great Ukiyo-e master Kuniyoshi around the age of eleven and published his first full-color print when fourteen. By the time he was twenty-six concentrating on prints of actors and warriors, he was a highly ranked Ukiyo-e artist of the day. He later turned to the depiction of the gruesome and bloodthirsty that was in great demand by the fin de siecle urban populace.
