Andrea Hintze The Mughal Empire and its Decline - An Interpretation of the Sources of Social Power.
Hampshire, Ashgate, 1997, First Edition, Octavo, Hardcover (Green with gilt imprint lettering), book condition: As New, dust jacket condition: As New. 299 Pages, text in English.
The book examines major developments and recent trends in the historiography of the Mughal Empire and post-Mughal state systems. The aim is to integrate the research of the past twenty to thirty years in a theoretical framework in order to achieve a better understanding of the transition period of the late 17th and early 18th century in India. The book outlines organizational structures and power relationships in the Mughal Empire and accounts for the redistribution of power on the Indian subcontinent in the context of long-term stuctural change in the Indian Ocean region. Rather than signalling social stagnation and decay, the decline of the imperial order and the transformation of the political system appear to reflect a process in which the state dynamically adjusted to changes in Indian society and economy. By integrating new social groups and incorporating various new technical means of resources mangagement, the state significantly enhanced its organizational power and its capacity for social control.

Esin Atil Süleymanname - The Illustrated History of Süleyman the Magnificent.
New York, Harry N. Abrams Inc. 1986, First Edition, Quarto, Hardcover, book condition: As New, dust jacket condition: As New Dustjacket with protective Mylar cover. 272 Pages, Text in English. 130 full colour images.
The Süleymanname, is an imperial manuscript, located in the Topkapi Palace. It is ineccessable to the public. This manuscript was commissioned by the Sultan (1520-1566) and it states in 69 paintings the highlights of his reign; and there were many highlights!
This book is a luscious facsimile of that manuscript.
In the first chapters it states the historical background of the times as well as the political and social settings of the manuscript. The birth of this manuscript was overseen by the Sultan himself, who chose the five artists who made the paintings.
As the original is not to be seen by the public, this facsimile is very interesting and an absulute joy to read for historians and art lovers.

Herreman, F. Océanie - Signes de rites, symboles d'autorité.
Antwerpen, Mercator, 2008, First edition, Quarto, Softcover, book condition: New. 184 Pages, 200 colour illustrations. French text.
Oceania makes up a third of the worlds surface area. It is divided into three zones: Melanesia, Polynesia and Micronesia. The populations of these regions have given birth to highly contrasting types of art honouring their gods, their ancestors or the spirits of Nature as well as jewellery and personal ornaments.
Melanesian art boasts a diversity of forms, drawing its inspiration from a mythology in which human beings and animals seem to readily interchange shapes. In Polynesia, art was principally dedicated to sovereigns, considered direct descendants of the gods, while that of Micronesia is characterised by its outstanding refinement and simplicity.
The art works in this title (many previously unpublished) are placed in context by specialist writers. With contributions by Ingrid Heermann, Karen Jacobs, Bart Suys en Pauline van der Zee.
To accompany the exhibition of the same name at the ING Cultural Centre, Brussels (23 October 2008 - 15 March 2009).

Sanderus, Antonius Flandria illustrata sive descriptio comitatus istius per totum terrarum orbem celeberrimi 2 volumes together with 3rd volume (never published) in facsimile.
Cologne, Cornelius ab Egmondt (, 1641-1644, First edition, Folio, Original vellum, book condition: Good: pages browned. Restorations. Please enquire.
An important work on Flanders and the history of gardens and cities.

Venette, Nicolaes Tafereel der huwelyks liefde, Of Verhandelinge over de voortteelinge der menschen. In vier deelen. In 't Nederduitsch vertaelt door emanuel Sinttema.
's-Gravenhage, Isaak Breedveld, 1728, First edition, Octavo, Contemporary vellum, book condition: Very good: first and last plate of 12 lacking. Volume 1 (part 1 and 2) and volume 2 (part 3 and four) bound together. 10 plates (of a total of 12).
First - and rather rare - Dutch translation (second published in 1767) of 'Tableau de l'amour considere dans l'etat du mariage' (published anonymously in 1686), a medical guide that presents an exhaustive look at the social and sexual aspects of marriage. Written by Nicolas Venette (1633-98), a medical doctor and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at La Rochelle. In the 4th part of his book Venette deals, among other issues, with the very private questions of sexual dysfunction (impotence) or sexual malformation. It is in this section that Venette brings up the question of disturbing sexual ambiguity, presented most dramatically by eunuchs and hermaphrodites. - NBG 45, 1079-80.
